Daronmont sells passive radar to US government customer
Adelaide-based Daronmont Technologies Pty Ltd has confirmed that an undisclosed United States Government customer has bought its ‘Stealth’ Passive Radar system. This represents the company’s first export sale of its passive radar technology. The value of the contract has not been revealed.
“As pioneers in the development of Passive Radar, we have invested heavily in the development of our Stealth Passive Radar system over several years,” said Daronmont Chief Executive Ben Norris. “It is therefore very pleasing to see our US customer demonstrating its support for our product by placing this order.
“As US Agencies employ the system and determine wider uses for the technology, we expect there will be many more orders,” he added.
Daronmont has now delivered 12 units and expects increased deliveries over the coming year.
Passive Radar provides the capability to detect without being detected. It uses reflections from third-party transmission sources such as broadcast radio and TV signals to detect sea, land and air targets. As it doesn’t emit a signal, the radar cannot be easily detected and targeted. With no moving parts it is easy to maintain and needs no licence to use.
Daronmont worked closely with Defence Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) to commercialise passive radar technology and continues to innovate and develop this world leading capability.
In 2017 Daronmont won a $7.9 million investment from the Australian Defence Innovation Hub (DIH) to develop a portable, passive radar for the Australian Defence Forces and which it successfully demonstrated in 2020. Recent trials have shown that despite its low Size, Weighty and Power (SWaP) the passive technology can detect targets over increasingly longer ranges.
Daronmont was formed in 1998 and specialises in the development, integration and support of radar, ESM, command and control and training systems across all Defence and Security operational domains.
